How Do I...

Find an e-book?   (View a brief tutorial)

• For a selected list of e-books, search by subject or alphabetically.
• For a more complete search, if you are looking for a specific title or author, go to the HML home page and click on the E-Books link.
• In the Guided Search screen, the first search box is filled in for you.
• Type the e-book title or author in the second search box.
• Be sure to select Title or Author in the Search in box.
• If you are not on the QMC campus and the e-book is licensed by the Library, you will be prompted to log in using your HML library card number. Your password is your last name.
• You can do a new search for an e-book at any time while searching in our Library Catalog.
• Click on New Search near the top of the page and make sure that you are on the Guided Search screen.
• In one of the Search for boxes, type electronic books, select as a phrase from the pull-down menu, and in the Search in box, select Subject.
• Add your subject/title/author into one of the other Search for boxes.
• The resulting records contain links to full-text e-books.

Find an e-journal?

• If you are looking for a specific title and/or citation, go to the HML home page and click on the E-Journals link. Search by e-journal title. If you are not on the QMC campus and the e-journal is licensed by the Library, you must click on the "Sign In" message on our web page banner to log in using your HML library card number. Your password is your last name.
• If for some reason our e-journals page is not working, you can view a list of our e-journals and their direct links. These addresses are for on-campus use only. This list will be updated every two months.
• If you only have a topic and would like to find journal articles about that topic, select either Ovid MEDLINE or PubMed@HML to search.
• Although the Library makes every effort to maintain the links to full text in both PubMed & OVID Medline, we sometimes are unaware of changes made by both publishers and indexers. Thus, we recommend that users always search both our ejournals page and online catalog for journals not linked to full text.

Learn about HML's electronic resources use policy?

• Access to the Library's collection of electronic resources is restricted to affiliated users of The Queen's Medical Center. ID and Password are required from remote locations. Remote access may be further limited to certain affiliated users for selected resources.
• Users agree to abide by all rules and regulations of The Queen's Medical Center, Hawaii Medical Library including its Electronic Resource Use Policy and not to make unauthorized use of another party's intellectual property.

Report a database/eresource access problem?

• To report a database or electronic resource access problem, please contact the Library at (808) 547-4300 or you may send an email message describing your problem using our Ask a Librarian service.
• Library staff will respond to you within one business day. The Library's business hours are Monday-Friday 8:00am-5:00pm.

Use electronic resources off campus?

• Electronic information resources are licensed, i.e. not owned, by HML. HML's electronic resources are governed by licensing agreements which restrict use to The Queen's Medical Center campus and to walk-in visitors. Remote access for QMC users is available for many, but not all, electronic resources. For the most part, the majority of resources are available remotely.
• To access a resource from a location not on the campus of The Queen's Medical Center, user authentication is required. Click on the "Sign In" message on our web page banner to log in. When prompted, enter your ID (library card number) and Password.
• If you have lost your library card, please contact the Library for a replacement card.

Use electronic resources?

• To access an e-resource, go to HML's Home Page, select the link for an e-resource and search for the book, journal, or database you are interested in finding. Or, use the Library's online catalog.
• Go to our Tutorials/Slideshows page or Tip Sheets & Guides page to find an appropriate tutorial or guide.
• The Library also offers training classes. Contact the Library at 547-4300 for further information.
• Users of HML's eresources must abide by the Library's Electronic Resource Use Guidelines. Each user is responsible for limiting use to individual, noncommercial purposes, without systematically downloading, distributing, or retaining substantial portions of information. Additional restrictions may apply.
• Computer workstations are available in the Library for access to the Internet and the Library's electronic resources. Visitors, i.e. unaffiliated users, may use the workstations, however, are limited to 30 minute sessions.

Technical Specifications for Using HML's E-Resources

To ensure that you are able to properly utilize the sophisticated electronic resources provided by the Library, the following software applications are required to be installed on the computer that you are using to access these resources:

• Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
• An e-mail application
• Adobe Acrobat Reader 5.0.5 or higher
• Adobe Flash Player 7 or higher
• Adobe Shockwave Player 7 or higher
• Quicktime 3.1 or higher
• Sun Microsystems JAVA 5 or higher
• Windows Media Player 10

Access the library building when it is closed?

• Access to the library building during non-business hours, is limited to physicians, residents, and service staff with proper identification and who have an emergency patient care need requiring access to the Library's information resources.
• QMC Security (x4508) provides after hours access to the building and escort service. A valid QMC badge must be presented. 24 hour access to the Library and its information resources is provided, either physically through after hours access to the Library building or electronically through its digital library at http://www.hml.org.
• Limited library services are available.
• A photocopy machine is on at all times and may be used to copy any materials.
• Books and journals may be removed from the Library. Users are required to complete a form and library's loan policies apply.
• Computers are not in service after hours but the Library's electronic resources are available on the QMC campus 24 hours per day from any computer with Internet access.

Access older materials that are on the mezzanine and in the basement?

• Older materials housed on the mezzanine and in the basement are available for the use of affiliated users only via the Library's paging service. Affiliated users may either call or visit the Library with their requests and Library staff will retrieve the materials.

Borrow materials?

• Borrowing privileges are restricted to affiliated users (i.e. staff and medical staff of the Queen's Medical Center, residents in the Hawaii Residency and Dental Residency programs, patients and their families, affiliated companies of the Queen's Health Systems) with an HML library card.
• Materials circulate for 14 days and, in order provide optimum use of the collections, there are no renewals.
• Fees for lost/unreturned/damaged materials and overdue fines are assessed. Borrowing privileges are suspended if you have 1 or more lost material(s) or have $100 or more in unpaid fines and fees.
• Users wishing to borrow materials must present their library card or picture ID.

Find out if the Library has a book I want in print?

• From the HML home page, click on Library Catalog and click on Basic Search.
• Type in either a title, keyword, or author's last name in the Search for: box and select the appropriate Search by category.

Find out if the Library has a journal I want in print?

• From the HML home page, click on Library Catalog and click on Basic Search.
• Type a journal title in the Search for: box and select Journal Title as the Search by category

Obtain materials not at HML?

• If you need a book, book chapter, or journal article that HML does not own, we will be happy to help you obtain it in a timely fashion. Contact us by any of the following methods to make a document delivery request:

• If HML lacks a critical text or reference item in your area of research, we will consider purchasing it for our collection. Contact the Library at 547-4300 for further information.

Register for a library card?

• Affiliated users may register for a library card in person at the Library or by faxing a completed registration form. You will need to present your Queen's Medical Center badge for identification.
• In person:
  1. Go to Information Desk.
  2. Complete the library registration card. Sign and date the card.
  3. Library card will be issued to you.
• By fax:
1. Print this application form.
2. Complete the form. Sign and date.
3. Fax the form and a photocopy of the front and back of your QMC/QHS/DLS/UH residency badge to the Library at (808) 547-4019.
4. Library staff will contact you with your library card number for immediate access to our electronic resources, and your library card will be mailed to you.
• Be sure to have your library card when borrowing materials as well as to gain remote access to the Library's electronic resources. Your log-on (HML library card number and your password) may take up to 24 hours to be activated.
• If you have lost your library card, please contact the Library for a replacement card.

Renew a book?

• There is no renewing of any library materials. Three days after the item has been returned, it can once again be borrowed by the same person.

Request a database/literature search?

• Just call the Library Information Desk at 547-4300 and a librarian can assist you.
