Medicine in Hawaii: Oral History Series is a set of video and audio tapes of interviews with Hawaii doctors and others associated with the Queen's Healthcare System. The project was a collaborative effort between the Hawaii Medical Library, the Queen's Medical Center, and the Division of History of Medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (University of Hawaii). The videotaped interviews were conducted by Charles S. Judd Jr. MD and George H. Mills MD between November 1980 and May 1985. Recent audiotaped interviews took place in February 2000, June 2001, and July 2001 by Ann B. Catts MD and by Judy Kearney, Leilani Marshall, and Helen Wong Smith, former librarians with the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center.
Below is an alphabetical list of the interviewees, their dates as known, the date of the interview, and a brief summary of the topics covered in the oral history. Links to biographies from In Memoriam - Doctors of Hawaii are given, if available.

Dr. Arnold discusses his education and medical career at Straub Clinic,

Dr. Botticelli discusses the Regional Medical Program in Hawaii, EMCRO,
the Beverly Payne study, hospice, and the Dying With Dignity movement in
Hawaii.

Mr. Brown explains the philosophy of hospital management he used when he
served as a trustee of Queen's Health System from 1967-1987, and as Chairman
of the Board from 1987-1998. He was a driving force and visionary for Queen's.

Dr. Burgess discusses his career as a surgeon on Maui and at Straub Clinic
in Honolulu. He explains his special interest in hand surgery and his hobbies
of shell collecting, woodworking and gemology.

Dr. Catts covers three aspects of her life: her role as Chairman of the
Board of Directors of the Hawaii Medical Library, Interim Director of Pathology
at Queen's, and being a woman physician. Dr. Catts also served on the board
of the Queen's Medical Center representing community doctors.

Dr. Cloward discusses the early diagnostic techniques used in neurosurgery,
instruments he devised and a surgical technique which he developed. He also
talks about his early life and musical career.

Dr. Cockett reminisces about his early life and schooling on Maui and Oahu
and about medical school in St. Louis. He discusses his return to Hawaii
at the outbreak of World War II, his experiences on active duty in the South
Pacific during the war, and his practice on Kauai after that.

Dr. Faus discusses his early life with his family in Boulder, Colorado, his medical education in Chicago, coming to Queen's Medical Center in 1921, his work in starting ambulance service and the blood bank in Honolulu, and his work during and after Word War II.

Dr. Goto discusses growing up on a coffee plantation in Kona, Hawaii, his schooling in California and Ohio, and his work as a heart surgeon at Queen's Medical Center.

Dr. Izumi describes his sub-specialty in chest diseases, including his work with tuberculosis patients before the existence of a drug treatment, and the lengthy history of his family in Hawaii. He forecasts the depersonalization of physician-patient relations with the advent of computers.

Norma Morasutti started working at Queen's in 1956 as head nurse for Labor and Delivery, when Hawaii was still a territory,. She discusses her early nursing years in Canada and Hawaii and explains her transition from Nursing Management to her final position as Head Coordinator for Facilities.

Dr. Quisenberry discusses his early life in Missouri and California, his schooling and early medical practice, coming to Hawaii to work in a VD clinic and his work in cancer control which includes the establishment of the Hawaii Tumor Registry.

Dr. Tanaka discusses growing up and going to school in Japan, his residency

Dr. Wade outlines his early years and schooling in Colorado, New Mexico,
and California. He came to Kauai to practice medicine in 1934 and remained
there, except for a tour of duty with the navy during World War II, until
his retirement in 1972. Since that time, he has worked part-time and traveled.

Dr. West discusses his career in medicine in Hawaii, starting in the 1930s.
He explains Hawaii's preparedness for WWII, changes that took place in the
practice of medicine through the 20th century, and the importance of the
local medical associations in the career of the practicing physician.

Dr. Will describes the changes at Queen's and the Pathology Laboratory,
in particular, over the 20 years he was Director of the Laboratory and Head
of the Department of Pathology. He also gives his insight on the challenges
of being the initial Vice-President of Medical/Dental Services.
