JOHN BARTLETT SAUNDERS

John Bartlett Saunders, a native of Paducah, Kentucky, was the son of Dr. Reuben Saunders, a well-known physician there. During the Civil War young Dr. Saunders served as regimental surgeon in the Confederate Army. At the end of the war he returned to Paducah and was in practice for about five years.

On November 10, 1870, Dr. Saunders married Miss Robbie Cobb in Paducah. Following their wedding, they left for Hawaii and arrived in Honolulu aboard the "Moses Taylor" on December 26, 1870. Dr. Saunders first settled on Hawaii, probably at Waiohinu in the Kau district, where he practiced and had some business interests.

Later he moved to Kahului, Maui, and practiced there until his death, which occurred on August 16, 1873. He had come to the Islands hoping that his health, which was undermined during the war, would improve, but he was only about 35 when he died. Dr. Saunders was survived by his wife and a daughter, Cornelia. A second daughter, Laura B., was born posthumously.

The doctor was a Mason.
