ALGERNON SYDNEY NICHOLS
Dr. Algernon Sydney Nichols arrived in Honolulu aboard the "Moses Taylor" on February 26, 1871. He then went to Hilo to substitute for Dr. Charles Wetmore. Shortly after his arrival there he purchased a building which he converted into a hospital for natives and Chinese. A letter from Hilo describes the hospital as being located in a secluded, airy, pleasant place where "the sick, the halt, and maimed confined there were literally enjoying their bad state of health." The same writer adds that Dr. Nichols, altho having been in Hilo a short time, is "quite a favorite already."
In March, 1873, the Board of Health revoked Dr. Nichols' license to practice medicine, which it granted on March 10, 1871. No public explanation was ever given for this section.
Apparently the doctor remained in Hilo, for he died there on February 7, 1877, aged about 35 years.
