Patrick Mormon Cockett

Dr. Patrick M. Cockett was born in Wailuku, Maui on May 2, 1911. His father was J. Pia Cockett, a long-time Maui resident who was principal of Ulupalakua School and for 25 years the Treasurer of Maui County. Dr. Cockett's mother was Mary Kawehiokalani Cockett.

Dr. Cockett attended Kamehameha School for Boys in Honolulu from third grade until his graduation in 1931. He did his pre-medical studies at the University of Hawaii where he graduated in 1935. While at U.H. he was on the basketball team and had a memorable trip to Japan to play basketball. He received his medical degree from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, Missouri in 1939. He interned at St. Louis City Hospital from 1939-40, and The Queen's Hospital, Honolulu in 1940. He was licensed in Hawaii in 1940.

Dr. Cockett joined the 299th Infantry of the Hawaii National Guard in 1940 and served at the 165th Station Hospital at Kalaheo, Kauai and at Tripler Hospital, Oahu from 1942-43. He saw active duty with the 118th Medical Battalion of the 43rd Division during the 1943-44 campaign in Munda, Solomon Islands. He then served as regimental surgeon in the 103rd Infantry Regiment of the 43rd Division in New Guinea and Luzon, the Philippine Islands. He was discharged with the rank of major in 1946.

After the war, he returned to St. Louis for residency at Lutheran Hospital from 1945-46. In 1946 he became a Diplomate of the American Board of Industrial Physicians and Surgeons. He returned to Hawaii and was an assistant to Dr. Sam Wallis in Lihue, Kauai. He practiced on Kauai from 1946 until his retirement in 1982. He was the physician for Lihue Plantation from 1946 to 1968.

Dr. Cockett was a member of the Kauai County Medical Society serving as secretary-treasurer 1947-48, president 1948-49, vice-president 1960, president 1961 and secretary-treasurer 1963. He was vice-president of the Hawaii Territorial Medical Association 1948-49 and later a member of the Hawaii Medical Association. He was a member of the American Medical Association, Hawaii Association of Plantation Physicians (vice-president 1959, president 1960), a director of the Hawaii Chapter of the Academy of General Practice 1963 and a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practitioners 1972. He was appointed to the state Advisory Council on Hospitals and Medical Facilities in 1965 and was a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Hawaii 1968-72. He was also a Councilor for Troop 85 Boy Scouts of America.

He met his wife, Clella, in St. Louis where she was a nurse. They were married October 15, 1940. During the war, while he was overseas, she returned to St. Louis. When Dr. Cockett joined her in St. Louis he realized he could not tolerate the winter months so they returned to Hawaii. The couple had two sons, Michael B. and Patrick, Jr.

Mrs. Cockett died July 28, 1981. She had been his helpmate and traveling companion over the years, as well as his business manager. Dr. Cockett died on May 2, 1994.
