HING HUA CHUN


Hing Hua Chun

Dr. H.H. "Hunky" Chun was born on March 27, 1932 in Honolulu. He attended Roosevelt High School, graduating two years ahead of his class, in 1948. He graduated with a B.A. from the University of Hawaii in 1952 and received his medical degree from Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, in 1956. He interned at Philadelphia General Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1956-57 and served an internal medicine residency there from 1957-60. He was in the U.S. Air Force with the rank of Captain and served as chief of internal medicine at the 6510th USAF Hospital at Edwards Air Force Base, California, during 1960-62. He returned to Hawaii and joined the Chock-Pang Clinic in Honolulu for the private practice of internal medicine in August 1962. He was elected Chief of Medicine at St. Francis Hospital, Honolulu, in 1968-70, a position which he held for 13 years. He was an Associate Professor of medicine at the John A. Burns School of Medicine, at the University of Hawaii. He was remembered as a doctor who made house calls and took care of low-income patients in his Chinatown practice.

Dr. Chun was a member of the American Medical Association, Hawaii Medical Association, Honolulu County Medical Society (president), the Society of Air Force Internists, Peng Hui, American Radio Relay League and the American College of Physicians. He married Alberta Aiko Nobu in 1956 and they had three sons: Jerold, Daven and Hingston. The couple divorced in the late 1960's, and in 1970 he married Connie, a nurse at St. Francis Hospital, who was the mother of three daughters: Maylynne (Gill), June (Beltran) and Joy (Groody). To help join the two families, they began running and became known as the "Hunky Bunch". They ran in the 1974 Boston Marathon. Dr. Chun ran in 25 annual Hawaii Marathons. Connie later earned a law degree and served in the Hawaii State Legislature. His three sons became physicians.

Dr. Chun died of lung cancer on June 12, 2002 at the age of 70 years.
