FREDERICK FRANKLIN ALSUP


Frederick Franklin Alsup
Frederick Franklin Alsup was born in Aurora, Missouri, on November 21, 1887, the son of John Martin and Kathryn (Farrer) Alsup.

He attended Scarritt-Morrisville College, Morrisville, Missouri, and the University of Missouri from which he received his B.A. in 1910, and then entered Washington University Medical School, St. Louis, receiving his M.D. in 1915. Following graduation, Dr. Alsup began a surgical internship at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis. After six months there he accepted an internship at the Queen's Hospital in Honolulu, where he remained until September, 1917.

Entering the U.S. Army at Schofield Barracks as a First Lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps in 1917, the following year he was sent to the Army Medical School in Washington, D.C., and became a member of the regular Army. He was assigned to Camp Zachary Taylor at Louisville, Kentucky, and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1918. In 1919 he served in the Siberian campaign at the end of World War I.

In October, 1917, Dr. Alsup married Miss Winnie Paris in San Louis Obispo, California. Three daughters were born to the Alsups: Kathryn Jane (Mrs. Charles E. Barry), deceased, Winifred (Mrs. Edwin C. Murck), and Martha (Mrs. F. Houston Wynn) deceased.

Upon his return to Honolulu in 1920, Dr. Alsup went into partnership with Dr. George Herbert, Dr. St. David G. Walters, and Dr. Grover A. Batten. Despite many changes in membership, the group continued. The name, Alsup Clinic, appears for the first time in the 1930-1931 edition of the Hawaiian Directory, and included, in addition to "Dr. Fred", Dr. W. Edes Alsup, Dr. Ervin M. Howarth, and Dr. William O. French. In 1938 Dr. Alsup was certified in surgery and was a member of the founders group of the American Board of Surgery. Retiring in 1955, he moved to Santa Paula, California, the following year. Later he located in Missouri and Kalispell, Montana. He made his final home in Belen, New Mexico.

Dr. Alsup died in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on September 25, 1967, at the age of 79.

He was a member of the Honolulu County Medical Society, the Hawaii Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Ozark Medical Society (Missouri), Nu Sigma Nu and Alpha Tau Omega. While he was in Honolulu, he was a member of the Waialae Country Club and Oahu Country Club. With either right or left handed clubs, he was a formidable opponent on the golf course. For many years he was active in masonic circles.
