Portrait of Charles S. Judd, Jr., MD

Charles S. Judd, M.D., 1920-1987
A graduate of Yale Medical School, C.S. Judd interned at Queen's Medical Center twice: from 1946-1947, and again from 1950-1953 in general surgery. This was the start of a thirty-four year relationship between Queen's Medical Center and Dr. C.S. Judd. In 1954, Dr. Judd began practicing medicine at the Honolulu Medical Group and continued until 1965. At this time, he left his medical practice in Hawaii to serve as the only surgeon in the independent nation of Western Samoa, a country of approximately 150,000 citizens. Dr. Judd was both physician and surgeon in Western Samoa for three years, working with the local doctors and teaching them western medicine. At the same time, he encouraged the Samoan doctors to use their knowledge and practical and medical experience in their hospital. For his work in Samoa, Dr. Judd was named Hawaii's physician of the year in 1968.

Groundbreaking for the Charles Judd Community Health Center

Kokua Kalihi Valley
In order to serve the Kalihi Valley community, Dr. Judd helped start the Kokua Kalihi Valley (Comprehensive Family Health Center) in 1972. The center was housed in three WWII Army trailers and primarily served immigrant and low-income families in the community. After thirteen years, the clinic became a permanent facility, and continues to serve the Kalihi Valley community today. In 1997, Kokua Kalihi Valley honored Dr. Judd when it broke ground for its new facility, the Charles Judd Community Health Center.

Letter from Judd to Stephenson

Hillebrand Medical Historical Society of Honolulu
Along with Dr. John Stephenson, Dr. Judd established the Hillebrand Medical Historical Society of Honolulu in the mid-1960s. The members of the Society included doctors, their spouses and others who served in Honolulu's medical community. They met several times a year, discussing various aspects of medical history, in both the local and the global arenas, and listening to guest speakers who delivered lectures on issues of medical importance.

Throughout his distinguished medical career, Dr. Judd served the Oahu community in many ways. In 1970, he was appointed Professor of Surgery at the newly established University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine and later served as Chairman of the Department of Medical History. Dr. Judd was also a member of a number of local clubs and associations, and served on the boards of several of those. Some of positions he held include president of the Hawaii Mission Children's Society, Trustee of Queen's Medical Center, and every office of the Board of Governors of the Hawaii Medical Library in the 25 years he was a member.
