HML's Top Ten Events

1. Hawaii Territorial Medical Society establishes a library committee. (1913)

Arthur F. Jackson Archibald Neil Sinclair James Robert Judd

Arthur F. Jackson (1878-1921) served as the chairman of the Hawaii Territorial Medical Society's first Library Committee. The two other members of the Committee were Archibald Neil Sinclair and James Robert Judd.

 


2. The Library moves into the Mabel Smyth Memorial Building. (1940)

3. The Library plans for and moves into its current building. (1960's)

Blessing ceremony for Hawaii Medical Library

Hawaii Medical Library moved into its current location in the 1960s. Even though the building was completed and occupied in 1965, only the main floor was ready. The basement and second floor were completed shells, lacking fixtures, flooring surfaces, and furniture.

 


4. Librarians attend a week long MEDLINE searching. (1973)

HML librarians, along with other librarians in the State, spent a week learning how to search the Medline database.

 


5. Celebration of the Library's 75th anniversary and dedication of Charles S. Judd, Jr. History of Medicine Collection. (1988)

Hawaii Medical Library celebrated its 75th anniversary with a program dedicating its History of Medicine Collection to Charles S. Judd, Jr., MD who served as the Library's President for many years.

6. The Library becomes a subsidiary of the Queen's Health Systems. (1989)

At a meeting in August 1989, the voting membership of Hawaii Medical Library approved the proposal to establish Hawaii Medical Library as a subsidiary of the Queen's Health Systems. While the Library's services and membership structure remained the same, the merger provided additional income and financial stability for the Library.

 


7. Mala La'au: A Garden of Hawaiian Healing Plants created. (1994)

The Library dedicated its garden of healing plants used in Hawaiian culture. The ten species of plants selected for the garden were 'a'ali'i, 'awa, 'awapuhi, kalo, ko, mamaki, noni, 'o'hia lehua, 'olena, and pia.

 

 


8. Web site launched. (1995)

The Library launched its web site in 1995. This is a screen shot of the home page in December 1996. After eight years, usage of the site continues to grow exponentially.

 


9. Consumer Health Information Service (CHIS) opens. (1997)

After spending the summer remodeling its main floor, HML opened its Consumer Health Information Service with a blessing and an open house in the fall of 1997.

 

 


10. Mamiya Medical Heritage Center established. (1999)

Blessing for the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center

Funded by a generous gift from Richard T. Mamiya, MD, the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center opened in July 1999 with a blessing by Papa Henry Auwae, a noted Hawaiian herbal healer, and an open house.
