As we stand at the threshold of a new millennium, now is a perfect time to look back at the roots and the founding of The Queen's Medical Center ...
In Kamehameha IV's initial speech to the legislature in 1854, the King voiced his desire to create a hospital for the people of Hawaii. At that time, the continued existence of the Hawaiian race was seriously threatened by the influx of disease brought to the islands by foreign visitors. Queen Emma enthusiastically supported the dream of a hospital, and the two campaigned tirelessly to make it a reality. They personally went door-to-door soliciting the necessary funding. The royal couple exceeded their goal in just over a month, raising $13,530. In turn, the Legislature appropriated $6,000.
This is the one hundred and fortieth year that Queen's has been caring for Hawaii's families and this gallery show is part of a Heritage Celebration to remind employees, patients, and visitors of the true vision behind the Medical Center's inception.
The Queen's Historical Room at the Queen's Medical Center and the Mamiya Medical Heritage Center at the Hawaii Medical Library both house an extensive collection of old photographs, instruments, and documents.
We hope you enjoy this look back at Queen's Heritage, and maybe it will conjure up a memory or two of your own that you would like to share with us (send email to mmhc@hml.org).
