James Isaac Dowsett Trustee, 1867-98 Dowsett, the eldest son of Samuel James Dowsett, is said to be the first Anglo-Saxon child, not of missionary parentage, born in the islands. As a child, he was a playmate of the future kings Kamehameha IV, Kamehameha V, and Lunalilo. Dowsett became one of the leaders in developing the whaling trade in the islands. Investing in both ranches and sugar plantations, he imported Aberdeen Angus cattle to Hawaii. A member of the House of Nobles during the reigns of Kalakaua and Liliuokalani, he was a supporter of the Revolution of 1893. Dowsett served as a trustee for Queen's between 1867 and 1898, the year of his death. |
