Classes


All classes are cancelled until April 1, 2008 due to Library building closure.

The Hawaii Medical Library is pleased to offer a variety of classes for its affiliated users. Our classes are designed to meet the needs of the Queen's Medical Center's staff and employees. Unless requested, all classes are held in the Library's conference room. Specialized classes may be developed for affiliated users at their request, as time permits.

All classes are being offered as one-on-one sessions and free of charge to affiliated users of the library.

This workshop provides participants with an overview of Hawaii Medical Library's most popular databases, electronic books, electronic journals, and the other resources available through the Library's web site.

This hands-on workshop covers searching DynaMed, a clinical reference evidence-based tool.

Finding the Evidence

This class will cover evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles and EBM resources available through the Library.

Finding the Evidence, Part 2

This class will cover additional evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles, research tools and search techniques. Participants will learn about databases such as Cochrane Library and how to use special filters developed to find evidence-based medicine citations in Medline.

Introduction to CINAHL Plus

This hands-on workshop covers searching CINAHL Plus, a nursing and allied health database, using the EBSCOhost interface.

Medline: Searching with Ovid

This hands-on workshop will teach participants to search Medline using the Ovid interface. During this 60-minute workshop, participants will learn how to construct a search strategy and locate journal articles on a particular topic. Techniques for narrowing and broadening results and use of Medical Subject Headings for more effective searching will be covered. Participants will also learn how to access the complete text of selected core biomedical journals using Ovid.

Medline: Advanced Searching with Ovid

This workshop covers additional search features of the Ovid interface. A hands-on portion will give participants an opportunity to explore these features and to practice using them.

OvidSP: A New Way to Search for Information

This brief workshop covers the new features now available with the OvidSP interface. A hands-on portion will give participants an opportunity to explore these features and to practice using them.

Registration is limited to 5 participants.

PubMed: Searching for Professionals

This workshop will introduce participants to searching Medline using the National Library of Medicine's PubMed interface. During this workshop, participants will also learn how to print and save selected citations. Search features such as Limits and Related Articles will be covered as well. This workshop will provide the skills necessary to use the free PubMed version of Medline from any Internet connection.
