To support the patient care, clinical, teaching, and research activities of the Queen's Medical Center and the Queen's Health Systems through the provision and management of knowledge-based information services and resources.
The Library will accomplish this mission by:
The Library's collections are designed to support the programs, services, and information needs of the Queen's Medical Center and affiliated users. The Library provides current and authoritative knowledge based information resources in a variety of formats with emphasis on clinical medicine, nursing, dentistry, patient care and hospital management. The collections includes books, journals, databases, models and charts and photographs with a growing emphasis on electronic information resources.
A current collection of consumer-level materials to address patient questions and concerns covering a wide range of health topics and medical conditions is also available.
The special collections of the Library include the Rare Book, History of Medicine, Hawaiiana, and Archives collections.
The affiliated users of the Library are the staff and medical staff of the Queen's Medical Center, residents in the Hawaii Residency and Dental Residency Programs, patients and their families as well as the affiliated companies of the Queen's Health Systems. The Library is open to the general public who are seeking personal or family-related health information although some services are restricted to affiliated users only. Any user needing assistance in using the Library is encouraged to ask for assistance at the Information Desk.
The Library is a department of the Queen's Medical Center, Medical Services Division and is located on the campus of the Medical Center at 1221 Punchbowl Street. Library hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. On site parking is available for up to 1 1/2 hours. For longer visits, validated parking is available in the physician office buildngs (POB) I and II.
The Library's physical collections include books (1998-present), over 250 print journals, reference materials, history of medicine collections, and archives as well as models, charts, videotapes, audiotapes and other formats. Older books and journals housed on the Mezzanine and in the basement are available to affiliated users only via a paging service. Library staff will retrieve the materials upon request. The Library's Special Collections (Rare Books, Hawaiiana, History of Medicine Collections) do not circulate and are also available via our paging service.
Quiet seating and study areas are available throughout the Library.
Computer workstations are available for access to the Library's website, electronic information resources, the Internet, MSWord, Excel and PowerPoint. The general public may use these stations up to 1/2 hour per day. A wireless network is also available for those with laptops. Televisions equipped with VCR and DVD players are available in-house for the viewing of videos.
Services available at the Library are reference services, document delivery, database searching as well as training classes and workshops. These and other special services may be restricted to affiliated users. For further information, please contact the Information Desk at 547-4300.
Borrowing privileges are restricted to affiliated users. Loan periods are 14 days and there are no renewals. Visitors may use materials in house. Photocopiers are available.
Access to the library building during non-business hours, is limited to physicians, residents, and service staff with proper identification and who have an emergency patient care need requiring access to the Library's information resources. QMC Security (x4508) provides after hours access to the building and escort service. A valid QMC badge must be presented.
24 hour access to the Library and its information resources is provided, either physically through after hours access to the Library building or electronically through its digital library.
HML's digital library is at http://www.hml.org and provides access to a rich and extensive collection of electronic information resources. Available is access to e-books, e-journals, databases, HML's online catalog and more. Access to the Library's collection of electronic resources is restricted to affiliated users and walk-in visitors. Due to licensing restrictions, remote access may be further limited to certain authorized users for selected resources.
Users agree to abide by all rules and regulations of The Queen's Medical Center, Hawaii Medical Library including its Electronic Resource Use Policy and not to make unauthorized use of another party's intellectual property.
Digital library services include Ask a Librarian, tutorials, subject guides to internet resources and a consumer health information website.
The Center houses the archives, museum, and special collections of the Library. The Center has photos, rare books, papers, oral histories, and medical artifacts concerning the history of medicine in Hawaii.
